{Hafner, Nancy}06:46:31 pmGood evening everyone, so good to be back with all of you for Mission, Goals & Strategy - Aligning for Business Success! I am joining you from hot, humid and sunny Orlando -
{Hafner, Nancy}06:47:23 pm"the happiest place on earth" or so I've heard! I have just enjoyed a wonderful week exploring the world of Disney through the eyes of my almost 6-year-old grandson.
{Hafner, Nancy}06:48:40 pmWhat has been a summer highlight for you so far? [as a means of re-introduction]
Ascheman, Rosalie06:49:57 pmThat sounds so fun Nancy! I bet it was a blast, even if it was hot! My summer highlight is having time to read again! I've read 10 books so far this summer!
{Hafner, Nancy}06:51:03 pmThat's amazing, Rosalie. I wish I was that dedicated to my reading, I am lucky to get my one book a month read for book club!
{Hafner, Nancy}06:53:39 pmDo you have a good recommendation of a favorite?
Ascheman, Rosalie06:54:52 pmI get summers from work off for the most part, so it's almost all I do. I really liked The Unmaking of June Farrow by Adrienne Young. Sunrise on the Reaping by Suzanne Collins was also great!
Yoswa, Toni06:55:07 pmLucky you! Summer highlights for me so far, is boating on the river (each weekend) weather permitting! πŸ™‚
{Hafner, Nancy}06:55:12 pmWelcome, Ratiba and Toni!
Maameri, Ratiba06:55:32 pmWelcome back Nancy and everyone happy to be here πŸ™‚
{Hafner, Nancy}06:56:38 pmThanks, Rosalie! Do you pontoon the river, Toni?
{Hafner, Nancy}06:57:27 pmWelcome, Angela!
Maameri, Ratiba06:57:31 pmNice Toni, we didn't do so much boating this Summer, I should plan it for my family, everyone is busy lately
Yoswa, Toni06:58:00 pmNo, no pontoon (yet) ;)...we just have a ski boat... but we need a pontoon to fit the family πŸ™‚ LOL
Roering, Angela06:58:43 pmHello! My summer highlight has been spending time with my family - watching softball/baseball games, reading, outdoor fun, and spending time at the lake!
{Hafner, Nancy}06:59:01 pmEither sounds lovely! Summers go by so quickly, Ratiba, I hope you have at least one family adventure!
Notch, Kristin06:59:10 pmHello! A highlight of my summer was a family road trip to Michigan and going to Mackinac Island.
Yoswa, Toni06:59:28 pmKristin that is on my bucket list! how fun!
{Hafner, Nancy}06:59:36 pmHas the rain interrupted your ball games, Angela?
Kirchoff, Heather06:59:54 pmMy summer highlight has been seeing my kiddos "first time" at the pool! The actual first time for the baby, and the "first time he'll remember" for the toddler. So much fun!
{Hafner, Nancy}07:00:05 pmThe Upper Peninsula of Michigan over to Mackinac Island is a fun trip, Kristin!
Roering, Angela07:00:16 pmSurprisingly we've only had one game cancelled this season due to weather. We've been very lucky!
Evans, Casey07:00:31 pmGranted it was only 15 minutes away, but I took my 3 camping all week at the campground! Had to swim every night because it was so hot πŸ˜‰
Notch, Kristin07:00:42 pmIt was beautiful!
{Hafner, Nancy}07:00:48 pmWelcome, Heather! Pool time is a great family outing.
Maameri, Ratiba07:00:50 pmwith opening another location and training all the new staff, I feel I need to take a long vacation afterwards, to the Mediterranean sea
Frazier, April06:54:33 pmI went to see my dad this weekend up in Red Lake for the Pow Wows, it was nice spending some quaity time with him.
Peralta, Mirla07:01:11 pmHello everyone
{Hafner, Nancy}07:01:20 pmI can relate, Casey! but our first week of camping it rained everyday - grateful for a camper!
Evans, Casey07:01:28 pmI also started the prep for my youngest to turn one at the end of the month (TEARS)!
{Hafner, Nancy}07:01:54 pmWelcome April and Mirla... we are sharing a summer highlight and will start our formal discussion soon! So nice to see all of you again!
{Hafner, Nancy}07:03:07 pmSounds perfect, Ratiba! So nice to have time with parents, April.

Notch, Kristin07:05:49 pm*
Ross, Amber07:06:27 pmSorry I'm late, internet troubles πŸ™
{Hafner, Nancy}07:06:33 pmTonight we begin another element of leadership discussion. In the video presentation two definitions of leadership were offered, "the position, office or term of a leader" [based on title] and "setting direction or vision for a group to follow." Are you a leader because you have a the title or is it something else that makes you a leader?
{Hafner, Nancy}07:06:46 pmGlad you made it, Amber?
Ross, Amber07:07:31 pmI am a leader because I enjoy helping people be the best version of themselves by guiding them to be a better leader
Roering, Angela07:07:39 pmI believe leadership is not defined by a title, but by action, vision, and the ability to inspire and guide others.
Quinn, Alyson07:07:44 pmI lead from a place of believing in the mission and our teachers being the best to uphold our mission. I agree amber, I like helping others grow and shine.
Kirchoff, Heather07:07:49 pmIt's my ability to meet everyone on their level that gave me the opportunity for leadership! Someone saw that I connected with colleagues in a way that was adaptable to all personalities and thought that'd be a valuable trait for a director.
Ascheman, Rosalie07:07:43 pmI think it's something else that makes me a leader. A leader encourages others to grow, and to me, a leader focuses on action rather than their title. I take initiative to get things done, support my staff, and work towards a goal that is shared by our whole program.
Ross, Amber07:07:57 pmYes Angela, you said it better than I did....
Brank, Nicole07:08:15 pmI am a leader to set by example.
Yoswa, Toni07:08:28 pmLeader based on ability to motivate, train, and inspire other people by leading by example and with passion.
Maameri, Ratiba07:08:31 pmI am a leader because I like to guide , advise and be part of the change I want to see!
Ross, Amber07:08:50 pmYes, be apart of the change you want to see!
Brank, Nicole07:08:50 pmAngela you said that perfectly!
Quinn, Alyson07:09:02 pmI agree, Ratiba, being involved and part of the change is motivational.
Notch, Kristin07:10:05 pmI think the title pushes us to lead in a different way as before being a "director." However, as a leader I set the vision and direction for the group to follow by providing support and guidance.
{Hafner, Nancy}07:10:11 pm"guide, Inspire, vision, connection, initiative, motivate" - these traits and characteristics all go beyond a title or position. These are powerful words and speak to the article "the Child Care Director: Not Just Anyone Can do this Job!"
Maameri, Ratiba07:10:20 pmYes, true Angela, it's not by title, it's by actions we do
Ross, Amber07:10:36 pmAgree, not a job any one can do πŸ™‚
Frazier, April07:04:14 pmI feel like I am more on the "setting direction or vision for a group to follow". I did not start as a leader, I started as an aide 7 years ago and showed teamwork and decication to the program. As a leader, I do not say :"do as I say!" I say "Do as I do!" I include the team in ideas to make to day and program run smoother. I am not the type to dictate.
Ascheman, Rosalie07:10:46 pmDo as I do! I'm stealing that, April
Ross, Amber07:11:08 pmDo as I do! I say that too!
Evans, Casey07:11:17 pm**I mentally feel like there are acquaintances or community persons that may think I have the title that I have, because my mother owns the company. However, I left my career in NY to come home and help with the family business. I started as a LT due to my post secondary, then an Assistant Director, followed by Director of Rockville (capacity of roughly 60) and then expanding my knowledge and post secondary to become the Director of Richmond (roughly 110-120 students).
Ross, Amber07:11:19 pmAll starts at the top!
Maameri, Ratiba07:11:26 pmAgree, not just anyone can do this job.
{Hafner, Nancy}07:11:33 pmThat is an interesting way to view the work, Kristin! There are expectations and many responsibilities that go with the title of Director!
Brank, Nicole07:11:56 pmI agree this job is not for everyone.
Evans, Casey07:12:16 pm**I consider myself very lucky because I have a lot of experience with teams/teamwork. I have been the leader of many different things, which I think also gives me the ability to "think outside the box".
Yoswa, Toni07:12:23 pmMy experience is...everyone wants the title/job until they have to do the job πŸ™‚
Quinn, Alyson07:12:41 pmThat is so true, Casey. It really matters that you can be a part of a team.
Evans, Casey07:12:46 pmToni -- say it louder!!!
Ross, Amber07:12:50 pmToni, that's not just leaders in this field. Staff too!
Peralta, Mirla07:12:52 pmToni … OmG! That is so true
Brank, Nicole07:12:55 pmOmg yes Toni!
{Hafner, Nancy}07:12:59 pmThanks for sharing your thoughts on what it means to be a leader! *

Evans, Casey07:13:21 pm*
Roering, Angela07:13:24 pm*
{Hafner, Nancy}07:13:27 pmDoes your program have one leader (you) or many leaders? Who do you consider the leaders in your program?
Frazier, April07:07:07 pm*
{Hafner, Nancy}07:14:09 pmDo others also demonstrate the characteristics you described, or do they possess other leadership qualities?
Roering, Angela07:14:09 pmOur program has an administrator, director, and 3 lead teachers that I consider leaders of the center. It takes a village!
Yoswa, Toni07:14:42 pmI have 3 directors underneath me and I am the Executive director to the program. We have education director (curriculum/operations), admin director (licensing, documentation, compliance), and a marketing specialist (for socials and weekly newsletters)
Ross, Amber07:14:44 pmOur Program has, the Executive Leadership Team ( HR, legal, company director, executive director, area directors(3). Then Directors and Assistant Director
Peralta, Mirla07:14:47 pmSmall program .. is just me, myself and a teacher assistant! πŸ˜’πŸ˜… but she leads our preschooler, so somehow we shared the leadership
Brank, Nicole07:15:07 pmWe have 2, we both the leader. We have an executive director and me who is the center director.
Kirchoff, Heather07:15:45 pmMy program has multiple leaders. Right now, the only ones I consider to be in this role are myself and the owner. We have a very young group of teachers and even between lead teacher and aide, the playing field is very level. No one has been "ready", confident, or in wanting to lead - in every sense. The staff are still looking for guidance. I am an on-the-ground leader for them, and the owner is more of an operational leader. I hope to mentor the staff so that more "leaders" come out of the woodwork!
Evans, Casey07:16:03 pm**We have multiple Directors; one per site- except our Rockville and Richmond sites because they are within 150 feet of each other! We also have a PIC in each building when we are not present.
Yoswa, Toni07:16:08 pmWe are all leaders in my program, I oversee that my "arms" are operating correctly (overseeing other directors) while maintaining the business operations side of the program
Maameri, Ratiba07:16:10 pmOne as onsite director and an executive director over seeing both locations
Quinn, Alyson07:16:20 pmI see us all as leaders. I really try to make decisions by consensus. However, in the end, I do realize the decisions weight falls back on my shoulders. I also feel a bit isolated as a leaders where teachers are struggling/interpersonal conflicts arise, because there is no-one to go to.
{Hafner, Nancy}07:16:30 pmWe did address this somewhat in the Human Resources course, but it makes sense to revisit the topic of leaders again as we move into thinking about the mission and values of our organizations and how they are lived out in your program.
Ascheman, Rosalie07:16:23 pmI think that in our program, everyone is a leader in their own way. The lead teacher is a leader by offering ideas, creating lesson plans, and advocating for the students. I'm a leader because I get the technical side of things done (billing, licensing, up to date on DHS papers, admissions). There are leaders amongst our board as well because they volunteer to lead tasks, such as advertising.
Notch, Kristin07:16:44 pmI would say our program has multiple leaders in different ways. Myself as the director. My boss is still involved in our program and is my support and support for our team as she was the interim director for a year and a half. I also see the teachers and assistants as leaders in our program, each in different ways. Teachers act as mentors to new teachers, as do assistants to new assistants. We also have teachers that have experience in different areas and we use that as a strength for all of us to learn skills from one another.
Frazier, April07:10:35 pmWe have many leaders, from the owner to the directors at the centers, we even have a couple of assistant directors. Each center has one or two PICs when the director is not in the building. I myself just took on a new roll of Hiring and Training Corndnator and Director of Education, which means that I am training all our new hires and checking in on them to make sure they are comfterable and not have any questions.
Maameri, Ratiba07:17:13 pmwe also have some teachers who are leaders in their classrooms and overall
Maameri, Ratiba07:18:12 pmkristin, I like that teachers leading by mentoring others
{Hafner, Nancy}07:18:20 pmA quote from the video presentation to wrap up this conversation...
Frazier, April07:12:06 pmI also check in with the veteran staff to re-train and help with classroom management and ideas to add to their day.
{Hafner, Nancy}07:19:18 pm"a good leader might need a title but the behavior and actions support that role" - This can apply to ED's, center directors, lead teachers, and specialists.
{Hafner, Nancy}07:19:52 pmI want to spend some time on the NAEYC Program Administrator Competencies *

Maameri, Ratiba07:20:27 pm*
{Hafner, Nancy}07:21:27 pmIn the video, five key functions of the program administrator were offered - pedagogy, organizational development and systems, human resources, collaboration, and advocacy. Which of these five functions did you read about and think "this is where I excel!" Don't be modest - share courageously!
Ross, Amber07:21:55 pmOrganizational development and systems!
Ascheman, Rosalie07:21:56 pmI feel I excel most in collaboration. I truly enjoy working with others, building partnerships, and fostering open communication. Whether it’s with staff, families, or community partners, I find that strong relationships and shared decision-making create the most effective and inclusive environment for children and adults alike.
Ross, Amber07:22:20 pmI am starting to dip my toes in advocacy more though!
Roering, Angela07:22:38 pmOrganizational development and systems and Human Resources are my strengths!
Evans, Casey07:22:47 pmCollaboration is my jam!
Peralta, Mirla07:22:52 pmCollaboration and advocacy are my strengths
Yoswa, Toni07:23:02 pmOrganizational development/ human resources and advocacy.
Frazier, April07:16:45 pmI feel like I excel in collaboration, working together with others is my strong point for sure.
Quinn, Alyson07:23:17 pmOk Amber, that is seriously my opposite, but where I think I need the skills most often! Collaboration and Advocacy within and beyond our school are my excelling areas.
Evans, Casey07:23:24 pm**My mini OCD moments thrive in Organizational Developmental as well.
Kirchoff, Heather07:23:41 pmCollaboration - like everyone else πŸ™‚ People skills!
Brank, Nicole07:23:42 pmOrganizational and collaboration are my strengths.
Ross, Amber07:23:59 pmI love making things easier for people, work smarter not harder
Brank, Nicole07:24:14 pmYes Amber!
Maameri, Ratiba07:24:29 pmI thinkI am good in human resources, I am proud of myself, I developed myself and practiced using the skills I learned from our last corse .
Evans, Casey07:24:32 pm**Human resources perhaps! I tend to find my 'people' of resources, and stick with them kind of thing!
Frazier, April07:18:10 pmAmber, I say that a lot!
Ross, Amber07:24:47 pmIf I can make the Director's "job" easier it takes a load off them!
Notch, Kristin07:25:02 pmI excel the most in collaboration and advocacy. I am part of an early childhood initiative, we have a parent advisory team, we collaborate with church leaders and he early childhood specialists in our area. I also advocate for what is best for preschoolers development and strive to follow the best DAP practices.
{Hafner, Nancy}07:25:03 pmI recall from the HR course that many of you identified as Democratic and Transformational leaders; it does not surprise me that I am seeing a lot of strengths in collaboration!
Ross, Amber07:25:13 pmRabita, that's awesome! Good for you!
{Hafner, Nancy}07:25:57 pmOK< part two of this question
Brank, Nicole07:26:00 pm*
Ross, Amber07:26:04 pm*
Evans, Casey07:26:03 pm**
Yoswa, Toni07:26:04 pm*
Kirchoff, Heather07:26:12 pm*
Notch, Kristin07:26:15 pm*
Maameri, Ratiba07:26:20 pmYes Amber I always remind myself and my staff work smarter and not harder
{Hafner, Nancy}07:26:22 pmWhich of the five key functions would you consider a "growth area" for you?
Evans, Casey07:26:45 pm**I answered it before you asked (lol).
Yoswa, Toni07:27:05 pmPedagogy
Ross, Amber07:27:06 pmAdvocacy, something I have been working on!
Quinn, Alyson07:27:09 pmOops- I answered this already, too. Organizational development.
Roering, Angela07:27:13 pmPedagogy
Notch, Kristin07:27:16 pmI know we took a Human Resources class, but it is still an area that I am growing in. πŸ™‚ I think we have some opposites in our class!
Peralta, Mirla07:27:35 pmHuman Resources definitely for me!!
Brank, Nicole07:27:41 pmAdvocacy is what I need to work on.
Ross, Amber07:27:47 pmBut, human resources is somewhere we can always grow in. Our field is always changing
Ascheman, Rosalie07:27:44 pmI see growth opportunities in both organizational development and systems and human resources
Maameri, Ratiba07:28:03 pmI think I need to work on organizational development and systems, to make my job more easier and efficient
Kirchoff, Heather07:28:06 pmOrganizational development and systems, maybe? It's a place for growth because its not one I've gotten much to practice
Frazier, April07:22:24 pm I could use some work on the human resources; I am just building this position from the ground up and am learning as I go.
Maameri, Ratiba07:29:04 pmI agree Amber, never stop learning, things are always changing, and generation to generation differs
Ross, Amber07:29:20 pmApril, it seems hard now but you will know exactly what you are doing since you created it!
{Hafner, Nancy}07:29:54 pmFor those of you that answered Human Resources, is the challenge around recruitment and retention of staff or training/development of staff?
Evans, Casey07:30:33 pm**April- so true! I bet someone in this class would be a great resource!
Notch, Kristin07:30:36 pmApril, I learned everything 2 summers ago and it is all changing already! I feel as though things are always changing and we are always relearning new things!
Frazier, April07:24:20 pmI am really liking doing this and learning and creating as I go.
Brank, Nicole07:30:46 pmI didn’t answer that but yes all of what you said is a challenge Nancy
{Hafner, Nancy}07:30:59 pmFor those of you that answered Pedagogy - do you leave the curriculum to your teachers and not get too involved?
Maameri, Ratiba07:31:27 pmApril, good luck leader you can do it! building this position from the ground up and am learning as you go.
Maameri, Ratiba07:31:47 pmgood que
{Hafner, Nancy}07:32:27 pmIf you responded with Organizational Development and Systems as a growth area, we will be focusing on how to address that in this course!
Roering, Angela07:32:34 pmWe've recently decided to purchase a prepared curriculum to help support the teachers. It has been a bit of a learning curve, but we are liking the results so far.
Quinn, Alyson07:32:34 pmI thought about adding Pedagogy to a growth point, but will say that the teachers' reflective practices and emergent curriculum is amazing, and yet there are times where I feel stepping in to create a framework/guidance helps teachers to not reinvent the wheel each month/year.
Notch, Kristin07:32:50 pmFinding trainings that are worth while and affordable. HR is a learning curve for me more on the hiring, interview, where to post listings..etc.
Quinn, Alyson07:32:50 pmOh good, Nancy!
Yoswa, Toni07:32:52 pmFor the most part it is up to the teachers however, I train all teachers on curriculum prior to handing them over to education director, I think the part that is the hardest is developing "community" among families. When we introduced our curriculum I had to train staff from ground up...I think it is more the "community" and "healthy families" piece that is a struggle
Ascheman, Rosalie07:33:17 pmI answered HR and it's because I'm not that skilled in it yet. I need to do more training/development of staff I'd say
{Hafner, Nancy}07:33:47 pmToni,
Notch, Kristin07:34:54 pmI should say that as I do more and use things we have learned in your previous course (we just hired a new assistant last week). I become more comfortable with more experience.
{Hafner, Nancy}07:35:02 pmI would offer that relationships with families and strengthening the "community" is also a part of collaboration and maybe advocacy - We can think more about that when we start talking more in depth about mission statements next week.
{Hafner, Nancy}07:35:59 pmOne more thought about these key functions and the success of your program, specifically **

Frazier, April07:29:55 pm*
Quinn, Alyson07:36:31 pm*
Yoswa, Toni07:36:33 pmNancy, I think I read more in depth to Pedagogy, I was thinking externally in learning community and healthy families. (smacking face emoji here)
Evans, Casey07:36:40 pm**
Yoswa, Toni07:36:47 pm**
{Hafner, Nancy}07:36:51 pmDo you find one or two of these functions to be the most critical to your program's success at this time, or are they all equally important and necessary? Why?
{Hafner, Nancy}07:37:30 pmI can see that, Toni.
Ascheman, Rosalie07:37:19 pmWhile all five functions are important, I believe collaboration and organizational development are especially critical. A well-organized structure keeps the program running smoothly, and collaboration ensures the team stays connected and supported. That said, each function is interconnected and contributes to the overall health of the program, so it’s important not to neglect any of them.
Frazier, April07:31:08 pmI feel like collaboration and organizational are two of the most important.
Yoswa, Toni07:37:33 pmI think they are equally important because you cannot have one without the other as they all pool over into each other in some capacity!
Brank, Nicole07:37:38 pmThey are all eequally
Ross, Amber07:37:52 pmEqually important. You need each component to equal each one out to run smoothly
Brank, Nicole07:37:58 pmThey are all important.
Evans, Casey07:38:03 pm**Collaboration and Pedagogy. I do think they are all needed to make "the world go round" in our centers/classrooms!
Peralta, Mirla07:38:05 pmAs my program grows I think they are all equally importan right now as I’m starting everything from scratch. Having them all together I what makes a great program!
Notch, Kristin07:38:27 pmI think they are all equally important and vital to having a program that thrives!
Quinn, Alyson07:38:42 pmNice answer, Rosalie. I agree. Everything is needed, and in balance they support each other. When the organization is running smoothly, collaboration happens, and from it you all have more capacity to be advocates at all levels.
Frazier, April07:32:23 pmWhen you collaborate as a team it makes you stronger and more like a family, that is what we strive for at MMC. And organizational, a center or classroom will never run smooth if it is in chaos all the time.
Kirchoff, Heather07:38:51 pmBig picture, they are all equally important. Depending on "the fire of the month", any of them could feel more important. Right now, I think human resources and collaboration are really in need for us. Other times, its been the organizational development and pedagogy.
Roering, Angela07:38:54 pmI believe all functions are equally important to have a well rounded program.
Notch, Kristin07:39:26 pmToni-I love your wording!
Maameri, Ratiba07:39:29 pmI believe all of them are important, because leadership directly affects the quality of the program.
