Swafford, Andria | 07:10:51 pm | I have been signed up for the course for awhile and it is under my name. I'm looking at my Develop account and seeing that it's for Community Engagement which might explain why I'm not on this roster! |
{Hafner, Nancy} | 07:11:09 pm | Hi Jackie! We know each other and I would agree with that positive and welcoming smile |

Some of you shared the best affirmation you have received in this role - most responses used words like "positive, welcoming, supportive" |
{Hafner, Nancy} | 07:20:32 pm | How do you briefly describe your program? What makes your program a special place? |
DeVaughn, Heather | 07:21:06 pm | Our program is a group licensed daycare, with Christian providers and a focus on science and nature themes. We are special in that we have highly educated and engaged providers, no staff turnover, have the curriculum and resources of a center but the 1 room schoolhouse feel of a home daycare (group licensed daycare ages 2-7). |
Ferrusca, Lady | 07:21:35 pm | My program is special because it provides an early childhood education experience focused on the child’s holistic growth. We are a high-quality Spanish immersion institution that promotes respect for diversity. We support children’s development through integrated exploration experiences, including the introduction of fresh food offered daily |
Hernandez Alcoser, Cinthia | 07:22:05 pm | At Mis Amigos Spanish Immersion, children learn through play, exploration, and meaningful relationships all in a nurturing, fully Spanish-speaking environment. What makes us special is how we combine high-quality early childhood education with the gift of bilingualism, giving children the tools to grow socially, emotionally, and academically while celebrating culture every day. |
Marron, Scott | 07:22:13 pm | Our center is a christian childcare center that focuses on the development of each child. We also focus on families and the community. |
Sadiki, Nazliya | 07:22:22 pm | My program is new and trying to find the best and positive place for children to thrive in. |
Villa, Johanna | 07:22:46 pm | Like Nancy Mentioned, Seward Child care center has been cooperatively run for over 50 years. As a non profit, our board of directors is made up of currently enrolled families. We utilize Highscope Curriculum and emphasize social emotional development and building conflict resolutions skills. |
Snabb, Jackie | 07:23:12 pm | Our program has very well educated and caring staff always striving to be the best at educating and nurturing children as they grow and develop. |
Staudt, Sara | 07:23:00 pm | I work in a 2-Gen program focused on serving single mothers & their children while the mothers complete their college degrees. Our Child Development Center’s focus on providing high quality early childhood education within a collaborative 2-Gen model is what makes us unique. |
Johnson, Zina | 07:23:32 pm | My program is special because it feels like a family. We focus on creating a nurturing environment where children feel safe, loved, and encouraged to grow. We also, focus on the family as a whole to support, and offer resources. |
Swafford, Andria | 07:23:33 pm | We partner with the university to train students to work with children and provide hands-on experience and mentorship. Our staff model best practices, guiding new educators to grow into confident, skilled teachers. |
Marron, Scott | 07:24:16 pm | That is great Zina! Our center feels like a family too. |
Sadiki, Nazliya | 07:24:43 pm | Andria I am looking for student to do the same... |
Johnson, Zina | 07:25:18 pm | Hi Scott, I believe that is what families are looking for. A home away from home in a sense. The family atmosphere. |
Ferrusca, Lady | 07:25:20 pm | i really like to transformer my place like a family, we are working hard with our director to connect the staff each other. |
Hernandez Alcoser, Cinthia | 07:25:55 pm | Love your response Zina. |
{Hafner, Nancy} | 07:26:05 pm | What a wonderfully diverse representation of program structures in this class! This is going to make for wonderful and meaningful shared conversations. I appreciate how you each spoke so eloquently and passionately about what makes your program special! Let's look now at your staff - this is a course about human resources after all! * |

{Hafner, Nancy} | 07:27:25 pm | Why is it important to have diversity among your staff members? What does diversity look like in your program staff? |
Ferrusca, Lady | 07:27:45 pm | * |
DeVaughn, Heather | 07:27:54 pm | Having diversity among staff members is an opportunity to explore different thoughts, ideas, and opinions. It allows us to broaden our knowledge of how different experiences shape us and shape the families that we serve. |
Ferrusca, Lady | 07:28:04 pm | Diversity is important because it provides us with the opportunity to learn from one another. Each person brings different knowledge, whether from their experience in their country of origin or from their cultural background. In the field of education, it is essential to make use of the different resources and strategies that each teacher applies through their diversity, as long as they remain within the legal framework. |
Hernandez Alcoser, Cinthia | 07:28:47 pm | Having diversity among staff members is important because it brings different perspectives, languages, and cultural experiences into the classroom. Children see themselves reflected in their teachers, which builds a sense of belonging, while also learning to value and respect people who are different from them |
Snabb, Jackie | 07:29:23 pm | Diversity, I feel, keeps things fresh and offers different points of view, thoughts and ideas about chilodcare and what we are doing daily |
Staudt, Sara | 07:29:05 pm | Our children & families have diverse backgrounds, and it is important to have a staff that reflects the population we serve. Additionally, diversity among staff will bring forward a diversity of ideas and perspectives, which is key in ensuring we have high quality programming. |
{Hafner, Nancy} | 07:29:08 pm | Lady, can you say more about what you mean "as long as they remain within the legal framework"? |
Swafford, Andria | 07:29:09 pm | 2. Having a diverse staff means we get to learn from different perspectives and ideas, which makes us stronger as a team. It also helps the kids and families feel seen and supported in our space. |
Sadiki, Nazliya | 07:29:22 pm | In that department my program have very diverse . Everyone bring something uniqe from the their culture prespective and language, love and affection |
Marron, Scott | 07:29:46 pm | I think it is important because it helps everyone feel seen and represented. It helps to build an open and welcoming culture. |
Swafford, Andria | 07:30:04 pm | Cinthia, I really like your comment about seeing themselves reflected. I think it's so important that they seem themselves represented in the classroom. |
Hernandez Alcoser, Cinthia | 07:30:08 pm | I agree with you Scott. |
Villa, Johanna | 07:30:26 pm | Our program staff is diverse in their cultural background, gender expression, and gender identity. Diversity among staff help ensure we do not fall trap of living in a silo of ideas- it helps us hear a wide range of ideas, experiences and questions. |
Marron, Scott | 07:30:30 pm | Thanks Cinthia. |
Hernandez Alcoser, Cinthia | 07:30:37 pm | Thank you, Andria! |
Johnson, Zina | 07:30:48 pm | Diversity among staff is important because it reflects the children and families er serve. In my program, diversity looks like having teachers form different cultural and educational backgrounds who bring unique strengths to the classroom. |
Marron, Scott | 07:31:25 pm | I agree Zina. I try to do the same. |
Staudt, Sara | 07:32:09 pm | Johanna - I love your point about gender identity! I have found that often that is left out of conversations around diversity, but it is so important! |
{Hafner, Nancy} | 07:32:23 pm | All of you expressed value for the program, the curriculum, and the children/families served by bringing diverse perspectives and experiences into the early childhood setting. Another question related to your staff perspectives * |
Villa, Johanna | 07:32:24 pm | Zina, I agree that diversity among staff can act as a mirror for families and children. They can also act as a window into different cultures, languages, experiences, practices etc. |
Villa, Johanna | 07:32:31 pm | * |
Johnson, Zina | 07:32:35 pm | I actually like all the comments, I thinks we are all on the same page. I agree with gender Identity. |
Sadiki, Nazliya | 07:32:30 pm | * |
Swafford, Andria | 07:32:36 pm | * |
Snabb, Jackie | 07:32:59 pm | * |
Marron, Scott | 07:32:41 pm | * |
Hernandez Alcoser, Cinthia | 07:32:43 pm | * |
Johnson, Zina | 07:32:54 pm | * |
Ferrusca, Lady | 07:32:57 pm | I am referring to the practices that each teacher has carried out during their journey as a teacher from their country. Not all countries have the same laws regarding childcare. Perhaps for a teacher, some strategy may be good or necessary, and they have used it previously, but it is not always within the regulations that may be required by law in Minnesota. |
DeVaughn, Heather | 07:33:01 pm | * |
{Hafner, Nancy} | 07:33:22 pm | How do you think your employees describe the work environment? |
Staudt, Sara | 07:33:26 pm | * |
{Hafner, Nancy} | 07:33:44 pm | Thank you for that clarification, Lady, and an important consideration! |
Ferrusca, Lady | 07:33:45 pm | We are currently undergoing a restructuring process due to the administrative changes that took place a few months ago. These past months have been challenging, as at times we have faced staff shortages and had to make multiple adjustments to ensure the care and safety of the children. The teachers have been very supportive in overcoming these challenges, although at times they have felt somewhat exhausted and curious about whether stability will arrive soon. Fortunately, just last week we began implementing better organization, which has allowed us to operate more smoothly. |
DeVaughn, Heather | 07:33:59 pm | Challenging, a bit chaotic, but energizing fun and supportive. |
Staudt, Sara | 07:34:01 pm | Right now, I would say “evolving.” We had a few people leave our team recently, and have had new staff people come on. Previously, I have had staff say that while they felt supported by me, the overall team felt judgmental, gossip-y and toxic at times. However, with the change in staff, I am embracing this moment as one for positive change in team culture - moving us towards a culture of open feedback and support for each other. |
Snabb, Jackie | 07:35:20 pm | My employees tell me coming to work is fun. We are all close, I work hard at listening to each ones wants, needs and complaints and try to navigate positive outcomes. |
Hernandez Alcoser, Cinthia | 07:35:07 pm | I believe my employees would describe the work environment as supportive, collaborative, and child-centered. They know their ideas are valued, and they feel encouraged to grow both professionally and personally. We work as a team, celebrating each other’s strengths while staying focused on creating the best experience for our children and families. |
Sadiki, Nazliya | 07:35:32 pm | Most of the time they do. Previous staff group i had gossip doesnt like to work and call in sick all the time. I feel like the group I have now is very good. Need a one more change where I am having hard time refiling that spot |
{Hafner, Nancy} | 07:35:41 pm | Sara, that sounds like a difficult situation, but hopeful at the same time! It leads me to my next question...in a moment! |
Swafford, Andria | 07:35:47 pm | I would like to think employees would describe us as a supportive, collaborative, and a nurturing place. They value the mentorship and training that help them grow as teachers and appreciate the strong sense of community with families and university partners. |
Marron, Scott | 07:36:11 pm | I hope they feel valued, cared for, and heard. I try very hard to listen to them and to use their ideas and let them run with it. I support them if needed. |
Staudt, Sara | 07:36:16 pm | Jackie- that's amazing! I am hoping that my team will get there soon! |
Johnson, Zina | 07:36:30 pm | We as a center as an organization, have experience many changes and many challenges for the past 3 years. And it was tough. But what helped our center, was the love for the children and families we serve. And the outside resouces that helped staff deal with trauma and community trauma and change. That helped build the foundation that we stand on now. |
Snabb, Jackie | 07:38:20 pm | Sara, being a good listener has really helped our staff grow individually and together as a whole |
Johnson, Zina | 07:38:08 pm | Sarah, I totally understand what you are saying, and I like the open feedback that allowed staff to open up and feel secure. |
{Hafner, Nancy} | 07:39:15 pm | I believe all leaders in early childhood programs strive for organizational collaboration, a sense of community, a place of belonging and support. But we all know that challenges will arise! * |
Staudt, Sara | 07:39:23 pm | * |
Ferrusca, Lady | 07:39:22 pm | * |
Marron, Scott | 07:39:27 pm | * |
Sadiki, Nazliya | 07:39:24 pm | * |
Hernandez Alcoser, Cinthia | 07:39:30 pm | * |
Snabb, Jackie | 07:39:51 pm | * |
Johnson, Zina | 07:39:39 pm | * |
Villa, Johanna | 07:39:39 pm | I would describe mine similar to Sara. I also think it is evolving. As a cooperative, we are constantly battling the challenge of involving teachers and parents in decision making but not at the cost of decision making and progress. We have had recent challenges with staff having different expectations of what it means to be involved in decision making as their idea being acted on. The past few months we have been working on reseting our work culture from a "gossipy" one to one of collaboration, open conversation, and re establishing norms |
Villa, Johanna | 07:39:41 pm | * |
Swafford, Andria | 07:39:46 pm | * |
DeVaughn, Heather | 07:40:04 pm | * |
{Hafner, Nancy} | 07:41:43 pm | Staff turnover is bound to happen. This is highly demanding profession with limited financial rewards. The reality for many people is they simply can't afford to remain in their current positions. In what ways does the work environment contribute to turnover or retention? Are you currently celebrating retention or challenged with turnover? |
Ferrusca, Lady | 07:42:41 pm | Our main strategy is to consistently share the current situation of the daycare with the teachers and provide them with trust and support whenever they need it. In addition, we intervene immediately in the face of any workplace situations that may arise. |
DeVaughn, Heather | 07:43:15 pm | The location is very convenient, staff feel that their family is respected as a priority, and they are treated as a professional (and compensated as one as well). We are celebrating staff retention...love my crew |
Sadiki, Nazliya | 07:43:16 pm | I have got challenge with tunover for last year from beeing the center director. MAny does not care anymore and walk out during the work hours. Thinking adding some benefit might help. |
Johnson, Zina | 07:43:47 pm | We are celebrating retention right now. I believe creating a positive, supportive work environment where staff feel valued and heard has helped us keep our team strong. |
Staudt, Sara | 07:43:57 pm | Work environment is a key factor in retention - happy staff are far less likely to pursue other work. We recently had 2 teachers voluntarily leave in early summer -that turnover was happening due to an unhealthy team dynamic. I also just had to let someone go last week. However, I believe we will be able to retain and rebuild a very strong team in the near future. |
Marron, Scott | 07:43:58 pm | We have a history of low turn over. We had amazing retention bonuses. When we got rid of them we began losing staff. We have tried to put new financal incentives in play but with little effectiveness. |
Staudt, Sara | 07:44:43 pm | Scott - I am having the same struggle at my work! I am trying to convince our HR team that more needs to be done to retain our veteran staff. |
{Hafner, Nancy} | 07:44:50 pm | I am monitoring the time, 45 minutes goes by so quickly and I want to get to our last question of the evening with a simple response to your leadership style. |
Snabb, Jackie | 07:45:27 pm | We have been experiencing retention for the most part. Most of my staff have been with us for 5+ yrs and a few 10yrs. Some are parts of my growing family, former preschoolers that have become teachers and a few I didn't know before they walked in the door. I have been at SNP for almost 27yrs |
Hernandez Alcoser, Cinthia | 07:45:09 pm | The work environment plays a huge role in whether employees stay or leave. A positive environment where staff feel respected, supported, and appreciated contributes to retention because people want to be part of a team that values them. |
Villa, Johanna | 07:45:09 pm | Environment will play a huge role in turn over and retention! We have an even split between staff being "vetran" (7-11 years ) and the other half being new. The veteran staff have largely expressed staying because of our compressive benefits and believing in the cooperative mission of our center. They feel like they matter, their ideas are valued and they truly build relationships with parents. However, the staff we have lost over the years often share that our cooperative structures is "too much" for them to commit to.Which I think acts as a point of improvement on our part (we can improve on how we onboard and orient new staff to the cooperative structure to not feel so overwhelm) |
{Hafner, Nancy} | 07:45:13 pm | What did you discover about your style? |
Marron, Scott | 07:45:14 pm | How is that working out Sara? |
Sadiki, Nazliya | 07:45:20 pm | Marron I would love to learn about your program. Because I feel like I put 10 step forwad make it 20 steps back |
Swafford, Andria | 07:45:27 pm | Turnover is inevitable, especially with students whose time with us is temporary. We celebrate the time they spend here, build strong relationships while we can, and wish them the very best in their future endeavors |
Johnson, Zina | 07:45:32 pm | * |
Ferrusca, Lady | 07:46:06 pm | An example of my leadership style has been when I had to cover classrooms, such as the infant room, where I took the initiative to engage in activities with the babies. These included diaper changes, stroller walks, as well as games and songs that support their cognitive development. Another example can be seen when I helped with washing cloth diapers, since they are provided by the daycare and must be cleaned daily. I was able to complete this process in a short amount of time, demonstrating that daily tasks can be carried out efficiently and effectively. |
Marron, Scott | 07:46:41 pm | Zazliya reach out. I am happy to talk. * |
Snabb, Jackie | 07:47:16 pm | I LOVE to model what to do!! always!! |
DeVaughn, Heather | 07:47:04 pm | I'm a democratic leader. |
Staudt, Sara | 07:47:06 pm | Right now, we have a program that pays for teachers to pursue a degree in ECE & then receive pay increases. However, we don't have anything beyond cost of living increases in terms of raises - it is a battle with HR to get them to recognize experiences as such a key piece for veteran teachers! |
DeVaughn, Heather | 07:47:19 pm | Just tonight I found out that a family will be late with payment and this is a recurring issue. I contacted my lead teacher/partner to discuss a way to respect the family but respect ourselves as well. We formulated a response and move forward plan that we could both feel comfortable with and make sure we are on the same page should family have any questions. Even though I am technically the owner, she has a lot of interactions with the families and a lot of responsibility, therefore I want her buy in and also value her insight and ideas when approaching an issue. |
Staudt, Sara | 07:47:33 pm | I'm a democratic leader as well. |
Swafford, Andria | 07:48:13 pm | I am a democratic leader. Early in my career, I focused on gathering input from team members but sometimes struggled with making timely decisions. Over time, I’ve learned to balance collaboration with decisiveness, ensuring that input is valued without slowing progress. |
Sadiki, Nazliya | 07:48:09 pm | Marron I would love to let me know how can I reach out |
{Hafner, Nancy} | 07:48:56 pm | Ok, everyone, unfortunately our time is up for tonight! I apologize for not leaving enough time to talk more about your leadership styles! Remember to post on the discussion board by |
{Hafner, Nancy} | 07:49:05 pm | Wednesday! |
Villa, Johanna | 07:49:08 pm | I think I am a goal oriented leader. I find comfort in making an outline of plan of how to achieve the goal and engage teachers in the brainstorming process. |
