{Johnson, Carrie}07:00:13 pmGood evening!
Berndt, Dawn07:00:37 pmGood Evening.
{Johnson, Carrie}07:01:30 pmLooks like we are still missing a few participants....
{Johnson, Carrie}07:01:40 pmI am going to check my email real quick
Berndt, Dawn07:01:42 pmlooks that way
Yadk, Ala07:02:13 pmGood evening
{Johnson, Carrie}07:03:19 pmWelcome in Ala
{Johnson, Carrie}07:04:23 pmWelcome Kayla!
{Johnson, Carrie}07:04:35 pmLet's get started 🙂
{Johnson, Carrie}07:04:36 pm*
Berndt, Dawn07:04:45 pm*
Johnson, Kayla07:04:59 pm@*
{Johnson, Carrie}07:05:25 pmThis week you did some exploration of MN’s early learning standards. MN has consistently invested in creating an up to date, research-based set of early learning standards called the Early Childhood Indicators of Progress, or ECIPs. Why do you think the ECIPs have been such an important investment for MN? What purpose do the ECIPs serve?
Johnson, Kayla07:07:01 pmThey help us set goals for children and help us see when children need more support in certain areas.
Berndt, Dawn07:07:08 pmThey make sure all early childhood educators are covering all areas important to children's success.
{Johnson, Carrie}07:07:33 pmThe goals are very important Kayla and knowing what areas too
{Johnson, Carrie}07:08:43 pmRight Dawn--I like comparing them to the K12 standards that licensed teachers focus on ---ECE providers are to focus on these birth to 5 standards
{Johnson, Carrie}07:09:26 pmThe domains of development within the ECIPs are further broken down into ‘components’ and ‘subcomponents’ – why do you think this is important?
Yadk, Ala07:10:21 pmECIPs help teachers and caregivers plan and support children’s growth.
Berndt, Dawn07:11:26 pmMakes it easier to see if children of different abilities and strengths are meeting an indicator. indicators are very general.
{Johnson, Carrie}07:11:36 pmYes Ala--what I like about the ECIPS is the domains show various skills along the continuum of complexity so we can we which skills to support their growth
{Johnson, Carrie}07:13:10 pmTrue the indicators help us target and the continuum of skills helps us scaffold--plus the age is "generally" accepted milestones but we must consider, age, individual and their cultural nuances too
Johnson, Kayla07:13:48 pmIndicators help us focus in on more specific skills, which I find very helpful!
{Johnson, Carrie}07:14:34 pmI want to share with you all that I was able to consult on the revisions committee and the new revised ecips for 2026 have already been posted online with the goal of full implementation by 2028
{Johnson, Carrie}07:14:37 pmhttps://dcyf.mn.gov/partners-and-providers/child-care-and-early-learning/professional-development/ecips
{Johnson, Carrie}07:15:31 pmYou can bookmark it for a later read of course 🙂
{Johnson, Carrie}07:16:20 pmLet's try an activity to explore how we might use the ECIPS in a practical way
{Johnson, Carrie}07:16:23 pm*
Berndt, Dawn07:16:34 pm*
Johnson, Kayla07:16:42 pm*
{Johnson, Carrie}07:17:16 pmThink of one learning space (area) in your current program or classroom – what learning happens there? What domain of the ECIPs (or component within a domain) would you say is supported by that learning center?
Berndt, Dawn07:19:46 pmI have some magnet toys where you need to move the correct color into the space with a "wand" and they are perfect for fine motor.
Johnson, Kayla07:20:13 pmOur science area supports the domain of approaches to learning. There are often new experiences in there to explore and problem solve.
Berndt, Dawn07:21:01 pmMy sensory table almost always supports science.
Yadk, Ala07:22:04 pmOne learning space is the story area. Children listen to stories, learn new words, and practice talking. This area helps with the Language and Communication domain of the ECIPs.
Berndt, Dawn07:22:20 pmI have a library area that would of course support language and literacy.
{Johnson, Carrie}07:22:24 pmOne example --I can share is the listening center---in it is some noise makers, musical instruments and the Leap Frog device with magnetic letters: Language and Literacy subcomponent Emergent Reading
{Johnson, Carrie}07:22:51 pmApproaches to Learning is one of my favorite domains by the way Kayla
{Johnson, Carrie}07:23:44 pmDawn --the sensory table can also cross over into other domains easily as well
Yadk, Ala07:24:14 pmThat sounds like a fun center! It is great for helping children learn letters and start reading.
Berndt, Dawn07:24:40 pmOh yes, almost all areas could somehow teach most domains if we look close.
{Johnson, Carrie}07:24:49 pm Now think of one particular toy or material you have in your program or classroom – what learning is supported? Can you link this toy or material to a particular indicator in the ECIPs for the age of child you work with? Which one?
{Johnson, Carrie}07:27:06 pmI was thinking the Leap Frog magnets says letter names, letter sounds and alliterations (words that start with same sound.) B says Buh B says Buh, B for boy, bat, ball... so that would be Language and Literacy: Emergent Reading and then "Phonological Awareness: Child is able to hear and understand the discrete sounds that make up language"
Berndt, Dawn07:27:26 pmMy art easel supports creativity and the arts. We use it with chalk, dry erase markers, crayons, paint, paint markers and etc.
Johnson, Kayla07:28:05 pmOur manipulative, such as duplos, practice fine motor skills and dexterity.
Berndt, Dawn07:28:06 pmOh I have that leap frog toy, yes that's a good one!
{Johnson, Carrie}07:28:43 pmAbsolutely Dawn--many of our activities and areas have toys and materials that could overlap with many domains. I have down "domain" audits when coaching and interesting enough Approaches to Learning, Science and Social Emotional are often the most "neglected domains"
{Johnson, Carrie}07:29:29 pmSo the challenge is go a few layers deeper than the domain...which component and subcomponent does those materials support?
{Johnson, Carrie}07:31:07 pmFor ex. Creativity and the Arts Components are: The Arts Domain includes three components: • A1-2: Exploring the Arts • A3-4: Using the Arts to Express Ideas and Emotions • A5: Self-Expression in the Arts
Johnson, Kayla07:31:11 pmManipulative support the subcomponent dexterity which is the coordination of fingers and hands
Johnson, Kayla07:31:28 pmP5
{Johnson, Carrie}07:32:46 pmthen the subcomponents under Using the Arts to Express Ideas and Emotions are 1.Using Art and 2 Using Patterns
{Johnson, Carrie}07:33:10 pmThat dexterity skills is so important
Yadk, Ala07:33:12 pmI plan to use an interactive play mat with infants. It helps them move, follow lights and sounds, and develop gross motor skills and listening skills.
{Johnson, Carrie}07:33:27 pmEspecially once we start teaching writing
{Johnson, Carrie}07:34:51 pmChildren who do not have strong enough core muscles, arms, hands and fingers can have trouble with dexterity tasks and writing---some adults interpret it as not listening or not paying attention to how the letter is formed ---when in actuality it can be weaker skills in other domains, components and subcomponents
{Johnson, Carrie}07:35:49 pmAla--exploring the environment and tummy time really helps with brain connections and early physical and cognitive development
{Johnson, Carrie}07:37:29 pmLet's reflect on our environments as a part of our curriculum and planning....When designing your classroom, why is it relevant to consider the children’s ages and stages, and development? What safety precautions must you be aware of to ensure everyone’s safety?
{Johnson, Carrie}07:38:20 pmcorrection classroom, or spaces within your home program.
Johnson, Kayla07:40:45 pmSizes of toys and furniture is an important thing to consider in terms of safety and age.
Berndt, Dawn07:41:21 pmOur environments need to support scaffolding for every child. If my environment only had toddler toys my preschoolers would have a hard time growing in the domain areas. I however need to make sure the preschool toys are not a danger to younger kids. Magnets are always a concern in my program. Magnet letters seem to loose the magnets and some building toys I have with magnets have to be checked often. I do not want young kids swallowing those !
{Johnson, Carrie}07:41:23 pmYes Kayla--Right-sized everything!
Yadk, Ala07:41:39 pmIt is important to consider children’s ages because each age has different physical and learning abilities. We need to plan the classroom and activities to match their development.
Yadk, Ala07:42:15 pmWe must keep the classroom safe. Remove small or broken toys, cover sharp corners, and keep the floor clean.
{Johnson, Carrie}07:43:08 pmScaffolding is such an important term---and teaching strategy Dawn. We have to think about safety and engagement equally. We don't want older kids to be bored and we don't want younger children's curiousity and tendancy to put everything in their mouth to be a risk factor
{Johnson, Carrie}07:44:23 pmI have so much respect for those who are working with mixed age groups! and even those who have 3-5 year olds because even some preschoolers can act like toddlers
{Johnson, Carrie}07:44:37 pmLet's stop here
{Johnson, Carrie}07:44:58 pmIf anyone has any questions please feel free to ask now or email me later
Berndt, Dawn07:45:08 pmThank you.
{Johnson, Carrie}07:45:20 pmBe sure to finish all discussion board post tonight
{Johnson, Carrie}07:45:34 pmit locks and no more additions will be able to be made
Yadk, Ala07:45:56 pmThank you:)
{Johnson, Carrie}07:46:32 pmYou are welcome
{Johnson, Carrie}07:46:38 pmThanks everyone
{Johnson, Carrie}07:46:49 pmHave a great night!
