Bender, Genaveve08:04:09 pmGot all the snow we got cleaned up finally!
Krueger, Andrea08:04:10 pmSanta visited my childcare and all of the kids loved it
High, Nicole08:04:21 pmI have a SUPER PICKY eater... SUPER PICKY.... yesterday he tasted a carrot. and today he ate one strand of some shredded lettuce šŸ™‚
Tyler, Stevie08:04:27 pmthe excitment at my house is high because my youngest is turning 7 on saturday
High, Nicole08:04:41 pmoh Happy Birthday!!
Tyler, Stevie08:04:59 pmthank you
{Norsten, Michelle}08:05:04 pmSounds like good things. The snow has been something
Krumm, Courtney08:05:05 pmI have a child who was DRY after nap for 3 straight days, that was super exciting for them!
{Norsten, Michelle}08:05:14 pm7 years is a big deal! Hope it goes well.
{Norsten, Michelle}08:05:30 pmVery exciting Courtney and Santa visits are always fun.
High, Nicole08:05:34 pmMy youngest is 16, started driving. WHERE DOES THE TIME GO?!!!
Krueger, Andrea08:06:03 pmI agree Nicole. My oldest turned 20 last week!
{Norsten, Michelle}08:06:10 pmOh boy Nicole, that is huge. Time goes TOO FAST for sure. I have two teenagers and often wish they were little still....sometimes šŸ™‚
{Norsten, Michelle}08:06:37 pmTime really does go fast. Days are long, years are short!
{Norsten, Michelle}08:06:42 pm*
Krumm, Courtney08:06:50 pm*
Tyler, Stevie08:06:51 pm*
Bender, Genaveve08:06:56 pm*
{Norsten, Michelle}08:06:59 pmWe will go ahead and dive into the questions.
High, Nicole08:07:17 pm*
{Norsten, Michelle}08:07:18 pmWhat do you think of when you hear ā€˜developmental delay’?
Krueger, Andrea08:07:39 pmWhat type and how can I help
Tyler, Stevie08:08:05 pma child is not meeting developmental milestones on an typical time frame
Krumm, Courtney08:08:18 pmA child is not meeting the ā€œstandard
{Norsten, Michelle}08:08:24 pmBeing helpful from the beginning is important. Thank you Andrea.
Bender, Genaveve08:08:32 pmNot hitting a milestone in a typical time and how can we help
{Norsten, Michelle}08:08:41 pmYes. Stevie, developmental milestones delay.
Krumm, Courtney08:08:46 pmA child is not meeting the standard of where the should be for their age group, etc.
High, Nicole08:08:54 pmi think about what type and how can i help
{Norsten, Michelle}08:09:23 pmAll good, and while each child is unique and may not hit a milestone at the same time...it is an apparent delay and often linked with other areas as well.
{Norsten, Michelle}08:09:57 pmAge group plays a role too, and it may be more noticeable when you have a large group of students.
{Norsten, Michelle}08:10:03 pm*
High, Nicole08:10:07 pm*
Tyler, Stevie08:10:09 pm*
Bender, Genaveve08:10:11 pm*
Singer, Zoe08:10:15 pmI’m sorry, my phone was showing week 3 as the ā€œcurrent weekā€. I was waiting on that one to open! Delay to me simply means not meeting a milestone common for. Certain age.
{Norsten, Michelle}08:10:22 pmDescribe types of delays. Why is this information important for you to know?
Lacina, Kristyn08:10:24 pm*
{Norsten, Michelle}08:10:40 pmHi Zoe, I am not sure why the platform does that. I have made that mistake as well!
Krumm, Courtney08:10:59 pm*
High, Nicole08:11:04 pmgross motor skills, speech, processing delay
Singer, Zoe08:11:14 pmWe can’t identify a delay if you aren’t aware of what to look for. Knowing basic groups is a great start! I.e. speech, physical,
Tyler, Stevie08:11:29 pmPhysical, Cognitive, Language, Social
{Norsten, Michelle}08:11:40 pmYes Nicole, I feel like speech is a very common one. Gross motor skills as well.
Krueger, Andrea08:11:41 pmDevelopmental delay, physical delay... It's important because you don't know what to do and how to help. They can differ so much
Krumm, Courtney08:11:56 pmSpeech, motor skills, physical, social,
Krumm, Courtney08:12:06 pmEmotional
Bender, Genaveve08:12:30 pmspeech, motor skills, social skillls.... its important to be knowledgeable to be able to notice a delay
High, Nicole08:12:31 pmI feel like in the last few years, there have been more speech delays than "normal". just an observation made while being around different group of children
{Norsten, Michelle}08:12:34 pmI like that you're all mentioning motor skills and gross motor. Sometimes those can be overlooked....a delay in a child walking or bearing weight on their legs.
{Norsten, Michelle}08:13:07 pmSpeech gets mentioned frequently. I am not sure why that is.
{Norsten, Michelle}08:13:31 pmEmotional as well! Having big reactions to little things or a fear of change, etc.
Singer, Zoe08:13:47 pmI think speech can be harder to overlook. You can carry a child but you can’t force them to tell you what they need.
Lacina, Kristyn08:13:47 pmI agree with Nicole there have been more speech delays I feel that in the past
{Norsten, Michelle}08:14:00 pmAnyone have any input on that?
{Norsten, Michelle}08:14:24 pmAre the children's speech development starting later than normal from what you have observed?
Tyler, Stevie08:14:34 pmi have heard that covid lock down played a big part in more delays in speech and social skills
{Norsten, Michelle}08:14:54 pmYes and in emotional skills as well.
Tyler, Stevie08:14:59 pmyes
Krueger, Andrea08:15:05 pmMany people were wearing masks during covid when a lot of the kids were learning to talk. The kids weren't able to see our mouths move
High, Nicole08:15:06 pmI have a 4 yo boy currently. I understand about 10% of what he says. He can say the vowel sounds and a few letters. He gets speech, but "m at a loss how to help
{Norsten, Michelle}08:15:13 pmWe will have to observe from now to futrure times if it is still as common.
{Norsten, Michelle}08:15:33 pmI think the use of technology in home evironments also can play a role.
Krueger, Andrea08:15:49 pmOh for sure
Bender, Genaveve08:16:03 pmespecially technology use at such a young age
{Norsten, Michelle}08:16:12 pmDoes he receive speech through the school? Sometimes a child needs additional support as well through private practices.
Singer, Zoe08:16:21 pmTechnology is a huge roll from what I see. Too often, parents aren’t speaking with the children but rather letting them hear from other devices. It’s hard for kids to see mouth movements on TV for example.
High, Nicole08:16:28 pmHe does. with the school
Krumm, Courtney08:16:39 pmTechnology has had a big impact I feel, lots of parents give it to the children as a ā€œlearningā€ source but I don’t always see benefits from some of the applications they choose
High, Nicole08:17:16 pmhonestly, I didn't even think about the whole mask wearing issue, hmmmm.
{Norsten, Michelle}08:17:19 pmYes. And daycare and school are where those delays or observations are made because the child is forced to have more interactions, follow directions from adults and work with other children.
{Norsten, Michelle}08:17:34 pmThat is a good point Nicole.
{Norsten, Michelle}08:17:41 pm*
High, Nicole08:17:45 pm*
Lacina, Kristyn08:17:49 pm*
Bender, Genaveve08:17:53 pm*
Krumm, Courtney08:17:54 pm*
Tyler, Stevie08:17:55 pmnot to mention we spend sometimes 9-10 hours a day with their children 5 days a week
{Norsten, Michelle}08:18:08 pmYour experiences with disabilities will impact your attitude about including children with developmental delays. Think about someone in your life with a disability who had a major impact on you. ā—‹ How did it influence the way you see disabilities? How have you changed or altered your initial attitudes as you work with children? Why is there significance in your perception?
{Norsten, Michelle}08:18:17 pmExactly Stevie!
Krumm, Courtney08:18:33 pmMy cousin has cerebral palsy and was born with it, he is now in his mi$
Krumm, Courtney08:18:39 pmsorry early send!
Singer, Zoe08:18:45 pmEmpathy is always widened when working with a child with a delay.
High, Nicole08:19:30 pmI agree Zoe
Singer, Zoe08:19:36 pmI worked with a kiddo who had severe ASD when I was first licensed. It was very hard but also think it was the best thing to help me with other kids!
{Norsten, Michelle}08:19:42 pmEmpathy is very important, it helps create a connection and build a relationship.
High, Nicole08:20:03 pmAnd when the kids see us acting with empathy, they are also learning it
Krueger, Andrea08:20:04 pmI learned you never know what someone is going through. It has made me more patient
Tyler, Stevie08:20:07 pmI my self have disabilities and my brother is on the Autism spectrum. I will often try my hardest to include children most other places wont take in sometimes to the detriment of my care setup
{Norsten, Michelle}08:20:35 pmEmpathy and personal connections can be a tough skill to learn, but it is something when learned that plays an important role in adulthood as well.
Krumm, Courtney08:21:02 pmMy cousin has cerebral palsy and he is now in his mid 30s, he was told he would never be able to walk, talk, or really do any basic life skills. His dad and family worked with him constantly and he has been able to ride a bike, drive, talk, walk, and do anything that anyone told him he could never do, so I think if we spend enough time with children and give them the resources and support they need, they can find ways to overcome these delays and find their own ways to manage different abilities to help them learn and excel
{Norsten, Michelle}08:21:04 pmThat is good Stevie that you can recognize your limits.
Krueger, Andrea08:21:10 pmI have done the same thing Stevie. You just want them to have a safe place
Krueger, Andrea08:21:40 pmAt least for me.
Tyler, Stevie08:21:45 pmExactly Andrea! it has taken several years to realize that though
{Norsten, Michelle}08:21:54 pmWhat a great story Courtney, I am so glad your cousin had a strong support system. It sounds like he overcame many obstacles. Amazing!!!
{Norsten, Michelle}08:22:26 pmThose impacts can have lasting effects, it is nice to hear positivity.
{Norsten, Michelle}08:22:43 pm*
Bender, Genaveve08:22:48 pm*
Krumm, Courtney08:22:51 pm*
Tyler, Stevie08:22:53 pm*
Lacina, Kristyn08:22:56 pm*
Singer, Zoe08:22:58 pm*
High, Nicole08:22:59 pm*
{Norsten, Michelle}08:23:09 pmWhat challenges may be present when you are making accommodations for a child with a mild developmental delay? How do you overcome these challenges?
Singer, Zoe08:23:47 pmOne challenge could be providing them with extra attention while not slipping on the other children’s attention.
Krueger, Andrea08:23:50 pmMaking sure that everyone is getting the same attention.
Tyler, Stevie08:23:52 pmcost, time, ability, not having an extra set of hands and eyes
High, Nicole08:24:14 pmRoom set up, the time allowed for activities, cost, needing extra help
{Norsten, Michelle}08:24:14 pmGreat and important point Zoe.
Krumm, Courtney08:24:19 pmI agree Zoe! It is hard to focus on one child so much when you have many to pay attention to!
{Norsten, Michelle}08:24:48 pmWhen there are lots of students, a lot of times there is not enough time to give extra attention so making accommodations is necessary.
Lacina, Kristyn08:25:02 pmBeing able to give them the attention that they need to be successful without taking it away from others.
High, Nicole08:25:21 pmand sadly, a lot of schools (atleast my district) are short staffed
{Norsten, Michelle}08:25:22 pmSometimes other children notice it as well, so really being coherent of everyone's needs is so important and stressful at times too.
Krueger, Andrea08:25:47 pmCreating the cozy cove was very important when I was working though "overcoming" that challenge
{Norsten, Michelle}08:25:54 pmThe staffing issue is huge all around in education right now. Our area is having a huge bus driver shortage.
{Norsten, Michelle}08:26:09 pmI love that idea Andrea.
Tyler, Stevie08:26:12 pmsafety and quality of care for others
{Norsten, Michelle}08:26:43 pmAll these points are important and play a critical role, quality of care is important too. Thank you.
Bender, Genaveve08:27:12 pmour "safe space" is also a good way to help over come those challeges...
{Norsten, Michelle}08:27:20 pmAlso making simple accommodations that include all children may be helpful too.
Krueger, Andrea08:27:41 pmVery much so
{Norsten, Michelle}08:28:10 pmExample, if a child has a gross motor delay...giving that child opportunity to climb, run, walk-it could also include other children doing the exact same activity.
{Norsten, Michelle}08:28:21 pm*
Tyler, Stevie08:28:26 pm*
Krumm, Courtney08:28:28 pm*
Singer, Zoe08:28:28 pm*
Lacina, Kristyn08:28:33 pm*
Bender, Genaveve08:28:34 pm*
{Norsten, Michelle}08:29:03 pmHave you been involved in a medical home model? What were challenges? Successes? Why is this model important for families? Feel free to think about the readings from this week.
Krueger, Andrea08:29:19 pmI have not
Krumm, Courtney08:29:21 pmI have not been involved in any type of medical home models
Lacina, Kristyn08:29:27 pmI have not
Singer, Zoe08:29:53 pmI have not.
Tyler, Stevie08:29:52 pmi have not either
High, Nicole08:30:11 pmI haven't either
{Norsten, Michelle}08:30:32 pmIt is not always the most common experience. An example I like to use is a feeding tube.
Krumm, Courtney08:31:09 pmI think it is important because they are helping to make sure developmental needs are being met for that child and it is a big support for the child’s well-being
{Norsten, Michelle}08:31:32 pmOr maybe a child has outside occupational therapy and the therapist gives you tips to use while working with the child.
Singer, Zoe08:31:47 pmThe most I’ve had is hearing aids. But that’s not something that needs continuous monitoring at the age my kiddos started with me!
Tyler, Stevie08:32:04 pmI had a child in care that had a tube but it did not affect care as the tube was needed for evening medications we just had to be aware and careful of their "button"
{Norsten, Michelle}08:32:15 pmYes. It is a larger team beyond a school district and the need may be more medically based, like a feeding tube.
Singer, Zoe08:32:25 pmActually, I’ve had outside therapy provide tips for a child before. That looked like them doing therapy here and leaving me with notes and tips!
{Norsten, Michelle}08:32:37 pmMore connections than we realize!
{Norsten, Michelle}08:33:05 pmIt shows too that everyone is on the same team, we all want a positive outcome for the child and family.
{Norsten, Michelle}08:33:12 pm*
Lacina, Kristyn08:33:16 pm*
Krumm, Courtney08:33:20 pm*
High, Nicole08:33:23 pm*
Tyler, Stevie08:33:30 pmAlso have had kiddos recieve speech services in my care and had their team recommend activities and tips
Tyler, Stevie08:33:33 pm*
Bender, Genaveve08:33:40 pm*
{Norsten, Michelle}08:34:05 pmWhat is a red flag for developmental concerns? How do you determine if a child has developmental red flags?
Krumm, Courtney08:34:25 pmNot babbling/talking, pointing, crawling, walking, and not reaching the developmental or age appropriate milestones
{Norsten, Michelle}08:34:37 pmSometimes an outside therapist has things you wouldn't think of on your own!
Tyler, Stevie08:34:47 pmassessments done twice a year and the QRDP
Lacina, Kristyn08:34:50 pmNot reaching age appropriate milestones
{Norsten, Michelle}08:35:12 pmYes. Not hitting those main points of development. Not making noise is a major one!
Singer, Zoe08:35:13 pmNot babbling is a huge one for speech. Not bearing weight or rolling are early physical indicators!
Krueger, Andrea08:35:19 pmnot hitting milestones
High, Nicole08:35:31 pmnot seeing them reach milestones at the appropriate age. during observations and documentation
{Norsten, Michelle}08:35:39 pmAssessments are a great way to show documention on where each child is at any given time.
Bender, Genaveve08:36:13 pmNot hitting milestones and there are many assessment programs to help or grow charts
Tyler, Stevie08:36:20 pmdocumentation used to back up those assements help show it wasnt a 1 time view
{Norsten, Michelle}08:36:28 pmI love that your pointing out documentation. That can help make connections with families, therapists, doctors, etc. whoever is helping the child, it is important to have that.
{Norsten, Michelle}08:36:44 pm*you're
{Norsten, Michelle}08:36:59 pm*
Krumm, Courtney08:37:08 pm*
Bender, Genaveve08:37:09 pm*
Tyler, Stevie08:37:11 pm*
Lacina, Kristyn08:37:20 pm*
{Norsten, Michelle}08:37:27 pmIf a child has delays in speech, how can your program promote development in this domain? ā—‹ Delays in cognitive development? ā—‹ Delays in motor skills? ā—‹ Delays in social and emotional development? ā—‹ Hearing impairment? ā—‹ A child on the autism spectrum?
Krumm, Courtney08:38:49 pmWhen I had a child who was slightly behind in his speech every time I would show him and object or take an object out I would make sure to say oh look at the red strawberries and then I would have him try to repeat certain words to me and doing that constantly helped to improve his speech greatly!
Krueger, Andrea08:38:59 pm Research into the type of delay and things that I can plan. Following the recommendations from a therapist for games and activities.
Tyler, Stevie08:39:21 pmwith any concern i Would bring this concern to the family and help them navigate the referral process and continue to support the child at whatever level they are at while scaffolding their learning until advised of a better way.
Singer, Zoe08:39:37 pmCrafting is an easy one! It’s a great one to get children to follow directions, you can easily ask questions & identify objects, fine motor skills can easily be used, etc
Krumm, Courtney08:39:39 pmI also liked to give him multiple options and tell him those options so then he would hopefully repeat one of them back
Singer, Zoe08:40:04 pmOver emphasis of sounds & movements of your mouth can help with speech.
High, Nicole08:40:06 pmWith a speech delay in one of my kiddos, I would correct/repeat words and then have the child say it
{Norsten, Michelle}08:40:06 pmUsing objects to help encourage speech, communicating with families and simply working with the child. All important!
Krueger, Andrea08:40:26 pmFinding ways for the child to be included while teaching the other children how to communicate, help and care for a friend with different needs
{Norsten, Michelle}08:40:28 pmYes Zoe, the child can visualize the sound and movement.
{Norsten, Michelle}08:41:23 pmThere are many different types of needs and while one isn't necessarily more important than the other it is finding ways to help a child where they are at and to succeed.
Lacina, Kristyn08:41:24 pmReferrals and trying to come up with games that all the children can play so as not to single out the child
Bender, Genaveve08:41:55 pmsearch out different activities to help different issues, flash cards, crafts, movement games (follow after me) ... reminding to use simple common words (to help speech) please, thank you, can i, ect.
{Norsten, Michelle}08:42:03 pmReferrals are helpful, and we chatted last week a bit on how there can be a wait and it can take time.
{Norsten, Michelle}08:42:17 pmYes Genaveve!
{Norsten, Michelle}08:42:25 pm*
Tyler, Stevie08:42:28 pm*
High, Nicole08:42:31 pm*
Krumm, Courtney08:42:31 pm*
Lacina, Kristyn08:42:36 pm*
{Norsten, Michelle}08:42:49 pmThank you for your time this evening. Like I said last week, these classes and chats always go fast.
{Norsten, Michelle}08:42:59 pmNext week is our last chat already.
Tyler, Stevie08:43:09 pmwow
Krueger, Andrea08:43:14 pmThey really do go by fast!
{Norsten, Michelle}08:43:43 pmI will post the discussion board for next week, please keep up with the questions.
{Norsten, Michelle}08:43:48 pmDiscussion Board: Initial Post is due Tuesday, December 16th , with at least 3 additional posts to other participants by Thursday, December 18th. ā— Discussion Question: In what ways can you influence transient delays in your child care programs for optimal outcomes for young children? Be specific about the delay and your strategies.
Krueger, Andrea08:43:49 pmThank you!
Krumm, Courtney08:43:58 pmThank you!!
Bender, Genaveve08:44:23 pmthank you
High, Nicole08:44:23 pmThank you! Have a great week everyone! Stay warm šŸ™‚
{Norsten, Michelle}08:44:29 pmThank you again for this evening, please reach out with any questions and if you have not responded to this weeks question please do by tonight.
Tyler, Stevie08:44:36 pmthank you you as well
{Norsten, Michelle}08:44:39 pmHave a great week everyone!
Krumm, Courtney08:44:45 pmThank you, you too!
Lacina, Kristyn08:44:59 pmThanks! You too!
Singer, Zoe08:45:05 pmThank you!
