{Lowe, Brenda}07:10:33 pmRosalie going over is very ok. I'd rather have that then under
Ascheman, Rosalie07:10:25 pmOkay good!

Kirchoff, Heather07:11:24 pm*
Ascheman, Rosalie07:11:17 pm*
Roering, Angela07:11:28 pm*
Ross, Amber07:11:29 pm*
Brank, Nicole07:11:28 pm*
Peralta, Mirla07:11:30 pm*
Yoswa, Toni07:11:31 pm*
Quinn, Alyson07:11:36 pm*
{Lowe, Brenda}07:11:52 pmDoes knowledge of the NAEYC Code of Ethics change your feelings about the value of the work you do? How so?
Evans, Casey07:12:19 pm**Reminds me that yes, the value is far higher than sometimes it feels when "in the storm" of something
Maameri, Ratiba07:12:32 pmSo sorry Brands,
Yoswa, Toni07:12:36 pmNo, but it it a great resource to provide for others to change their feelings about the value of work we do!
Maameri, Ratiba07:12:49 pmBranda, just got home
{Lowe, Brenda}07:13:04 pmRatiba welcome
{Lowe, Brenda}07:13:20 pmCasey I love that
Ascheman, Rosalie07:13:26 pmI don't think it changes the value of the work I do, but like what Toni said, it can change other's feelings about our work
Ross, Amber07:13:34 pmNo, our work is still valuable. More of a different lenses and more tools on my tool belt!
{Lowe, Brenda}07:13:44 pmToni it is a great resoruce to reference back to - especially with disagreeing parties or new hires
Yoswa, Toni07:13:47 pm100%
Kirchoff, Heather07:13:49 pmI think it solidifies the value, more than make me feel differently about it. We all know what we do is so important, but often the feedback or thanklessness starts to feel normal. The COE and the strength behind it is a good reminder that this is more than just a job, and more than just babysitting.
Ross, Amber07:14:07 pmYes, Heather I agree!
{Lowe, Brenda}07:14:35 pmWell said
Quinn, Alyson07:14:31 pmIt feels like it gives me something to stand on to emphasize the profession of early childhood as a profession.
{Lowe, Brenda}07:14:50 pmI like the different lens/perspectives. That is important in our work
Maameri, Ratiba07:14:53 pmThank you for an amazing 4 weeks, Brenda!
Ascheman, Rosalie07:14:38 pmI like that Heather!
{Lowe, Brenda}07:14:59 pmHeather I like the solidifies point
Notch, Kristin07:15:04 pmI believe it signifies how important our job is and the impact educators truly have on children and their families lives. I also believe it gives us an outline to follow to help us when we have to make difficult decisions and hard conversations.
Notch, Kristin07:15:14 pmAlyson, I like your description!
Brank, Nicole07:15:18 pmI like that Heather!
Ross, Amber07:15:21 pmI feel like our field is always changing, having a resource is important
Peralta, Mirla07:15:26 pmYes!! It reminds me that what I do every dayโ€”caring for and educating young childrenโ€”has a deep impact and carries a professional responsibility to uphold high standards.
Ross, Amber07:15:41 pmMirla, I agree!
Maameri, Ratiba07:16:10 pmI feed proud more than ever using the code of ethics in all area of my life not just at work ๐Ÿ™‚
Brank, Nicole07:16:01 pmIt helps recognize that we are educators!
{Lowe, Brenda}07:16:16 pmYou are so welcome Ratiba ๐Ÿ™‚
{Lowe, Brenda}07:16:25 pmRatiba that is a great point
Roering, Angela07:16:20 pmI agree that it reinforces both the value and purpose of the work we do. So much of our work is rooted in relationships, trust, and our core values.
{Lowe, Brenda}07:16:31 pmMirla that is what it is all about
Evans, Casey07:16:27 pmI like that Amber!
{Lowe, Brenda}07:16:49 pmKristin yessssss
{Lowe, Brenda}07:17:06 pmNicole it does, and that we are professionals in the field
{Lowe, Brenda}07:17:12 pm*
Kirchoff, Heather07:17:07 pm*
Ross, Amber07:17:08 pm*
Roering, Angela07:17:13 pm*
Brank, Nicole07:17:12 pm*
Yoswa, Toni07:17:15 pm*
Evans, Casey07:17:25 pm*
{Lowe, Brenda}07:17:40 pmThe rest of tonight will be reflection questions: I feel more confident and ethically competent because:
Maameri, Ratiba07:17:52 pm*
Roering, Angela07:17:55 pmHaving the necessary resources to work through hard situations!
Notch, Kristin07:18:20 pm*
Ascheman, Rosalie07:18:14 pmI was able to use real life situations to solve ethical dilemmas.
Quinn, Alyson07:18:24 pmBecause I can use the COE to train my staff on a common language and base for supporting children and families.
Ross, Amber07:18:26 pmI have a better understanding of the COE, I always had awarness of what it was. Just dug deeper to really have a better understanding!
Brank, Nicole07:18:27 pmI feel more confident and ethically competent because we have these resources to help us when we find ourselves in a difficult situations.
Kirchoff, Heather07:18:31 pmBecause I can defend my decision making with the COE, and know that its principles and values are rooted in the best interest of the child and therefore my choices will always be a reflection of that
Yoswa, Toni07:18:37 pmconfident and ethically confident because reflecting and reviewing the code of ethics reassured me in a recent decision that was difficult. The reflection of it during this course was wonderful!
Peralta, Mirla07:19:02 pmI feel more confident and ethically competent because I have been provided clear guidance for making responsible and respectful decisions in my work with children and families.
{Lowe, Brenda}07:19:43 pmok I'm hearing resources, staff supports, awareness, decision making, confidence, problem solving, competence, guidance,
Evans, Casey07:19:40 pm** I feel more confident and ethically competent because reflection is the biggest part of personal growth. The COE is a great resource that supports contemplating and reflecting on ethical situations and dilemmas.
{Lowe, Brenda}07:19:55 pmThese are all power words and hugely important
{Lowe, Brenda}07:20:02 pmexactly Casey
{Lowe, Brenda}07:20:21 pmMirla I like that you keep bringing us back to children and families
Notch, Kristin07:20:17 pmI feel more confident having expanding my knowledge and resources pertaining to the Code of Conduct. Also, hearing other stories of and examples helps build knowledge and understanding, too.
{Lowe, Brenda}07:21:07 pmI know the code is not rivoting! Right. But I I agee that as a leader it helped my confidence and having that solid resource at my fingertips was helpful!
{Lowe, Brenda}07:21:23 pmIt's like knowing where to look in licensing for support when we need it.
Quinn, Alyson07:21:26 pmindeed.
{Lowe, Brenda}07:21:39 pm*
Brank, Nicole07:21:31 pmI agree Brenda!
Roering, Angela07:21:33 pm*
Brank, Nicole07:21:32 pm*
Ross, Amber07:21:34 pm*
Notch, Kristin07:21:35 pm*
Yoswa, Toni07:21:35 pm*
Ascheman, Rosalie07:21:30 pm*
Maameri, Ratiba07:21:49 pm Now I have a clear guide to help me make decisions and take action, a strong support I can count on. The Code of Ethics gives me confidence when things get tough and helps me stay focused on whatโ€™s best for the children, families, and staff.
Kirchoff, Heather07:21:48 pm*
Quinn, Alyson07:21:59 pm*
Maameri, Ratiba07:22:12 pm*
Peralta, Mirla07:22:07 pm*
{Lowe, Brenda}07:22:18 pmThis coursework has made me more aware of:
Ascheman, Rosalie07:22:32 pmThe difference between ethical dilemmas and personal dilemmas. I feel like I finally understand what an ethical dilemma truly is and how I can resolve them by using the code
Peralta, Mirla07:23:03 pmIโ€™m not alone in the field! Lol we all had or has experienced something similar!
Ross, Amber07:23:19 pmHow important staying consistent with the code can help in difficult situations
Brank, Nicole07:23:19 pmIt has made me aware of that I am not alone in make tough decisions!
Kirchoff, Heather07:23:33 pmMy responsibilities as a leader and the trickle down effect of my decision making. Its also made me more aware of the shared struggles that leadership in ECE has, as well as how often we've been trying to execute ethical finesse without knowing there was a specific term for it!
{Lowe, Brenda}07:23:43 pmRosalie that is a deep answer and I appreciate that way of thinking
Yoswa, Toni07:23:39 pmmore aware of the differences in all of our programs, as well as the struggles.
{Lowe, Brenda}07:23:52 pmMirla oh my goodness so true
{Lowe, Brenda}07:24:10 pmyesss Amber, and others are watching us be consistant or not
{Lowe, Brenda}07:24:20 pmexactly Nicole
Ross, Amber07:24:13 pmYes! Starts at the top!
Notch, Kristin07:24:16 pmYes, Mirla. Same! That we all have similar experiences and have used the code to guide them to make the right ethical decisions.
Maameri, Ratiba07:24:43 pmIโ€™ve learned how important ethical responsibilities are in early childhood education, and how my decisions impact children, families, and staff. Itโ€™s also shown me the value of taking time to reflect on my actions, communicate clearly, act with professionalism, and create a positive, inclusive environment .
{Lowe, Brenda}07:24:43 pmHeather the trickle down effect - it's so important and to think that WE are the one's making that impact
Roering, Angela07:24:39 pmIt has made me more aware that not only do we have responsibilities to the children, but also to our families and staff. We are so focused on the the well-being of the child, it was nice to be reminded of the whole picture.
{Lowe, Brenda}07:24:53 pmToni it's so needed right
Yoswa, Toni07:25:03 pmAbsolutely!
{Lowe, Brenda}07:25:14 pmRatiba yes, every decision we make impacts us the children and the families
Evans, Casey07:25:09 pm** This course work has made me more aware of how to dig deeper, and think in abstract ways sometimes when taking on an ethical question or situation. Remembering to exhaust all the thought processes and pathways before bringing to solution!
Quinn, Alyson07:25:15 pmThe history behind the ethics and how it has been revised over time help me have even greater confidence in how important it is to have common guidelines. I feel it reinforces so much of what we do well, and reminds us where we can grow.
Notch, Kristin07:25:22 pmAlso, how to revise the wording in policies, and handbooks to better align with the code to give a clearer understanding.
{Lowe, Brenda}07:25:33 pmAND think about how we are on auto pilot most of t he day
{Lowe, Brenda}07:25:39 pmGood one Kristin
Ross, Amber07:25:46 pmOh yes.. auto pilot is so true!
Brank, Nicole07:25:46 pmYes, auto pilot....
Peralta, Mirla07:26:04 pmAuto pilot โ€ฆ so true!
{Lowe, Brenda}07:26:21 pmCasey Ilove that because it makes me think of how we uncover grey areas that need to be ironed out. It's an opportunity
{Lowe, Brenda}07:26:41 pm๐Ÿ˜
{Lowe, Brenda}07:26:44 pm*
Yoswa, Toni07:26:40 pm*
Kirchoff, Heather07:26:40 pm*
Ascheman, Rosalie07:26:33 pm*
Roering, Angela07:26:41 pm*
Notch, Kristin07:26:42 pm*
Quinn, Alyson07:26:43 pm*
Evans, Casey07:26:44 pm** Exactly! It is not black and white- most of the time!
Peralta, Mirla07:26:47 pm*
Ross, Amber07:26:48 pm*
Brank, Nicole07:26:48 pm*
{Lowe, Brenda}07:27:05 pmfinish this sentence: When I am faced with an ethical dilemma in my workplace I will:
Ascheman, Rosalie07:27:01 pmlean on the COE to help me resolve the dilemma.
Yoswa, Toni07:27:13 pmAlways refer to COE!
Ross, Amber07:27:21 pmrefer to the COE and make a informed decision!
Roering, Angela07:27:36 pmFollow the code!
Kirchoff, Heather07:27:39 pmlean into the COE!
Brank, Nicole07:27:40 pmI will use the COE and make a decision even if it's not the one that people want.
Peralta, Mirla07:27:42 pmTake a deep breath, clear my mind and refer, always refer to COE
Ross, Amber07:28:14 pmYes, we must remember to breath and clear our minds!!!!
Evans, Casey07:28:18 pm** I will remember my resources, remember I am human, and remember to hear everyone out completely.
Notch, Kristin07:28:25 pmCommunicate with all parties, while also referring to the COE and check in after we find a resolution to the problem.
{Lowe, Brenda}07:28:35 pmWell you are all on the same page most definetly.
{Lowe, Brenda}07:28:52 pmMirla you made me giggle - take that deep breath
Maameri, Ratiba07:29:01 pmRosalie, me too COE is my go to ๐Ÿ™‚
{Lowe, Brenda}07:29:01 pmand Amber
Quinn, Alyson07:28:53 pmPause, listen, reflect of the COE and share it with others to reflect upon as well before coming to a conclusion.
Ross, Amber07:29:06 pmReminds me of Bluey!
{Lowe, Brenda}07:29:17 pmit's like self care and then we can conquer or iron out or whatever needs to be done
Peralta, Mirla07:29:28 pmTaking deep breaths are my mantra! Sometimes I take decisions out of โ€œfeelingsโ€ and I need to pause, give it sometime and then โ€œrespondโ€
Ross, Amber07:30:04 pmYes! and it's okay if you don't have all the answers right away or there's silence
{Lowe, Brenda}07:30:17 pmI forget to breathe. It's terrible and then after I'm so exhausted I'm ready to drop. I think I'm getting better at trying to remember
Maameri, Ratiba07:30:21 pmI completely agree Branda, we need to take care of ourselves so we can care about others family or children in our care !
{Lowe, Brenda}07:30:35 pmYes Pause - that is the thoughts that were in my head
{Lowe, Brenda}07:30:47 pmAmber exactly
Quinn, Alyson07:30:52 pmMirla, we breathe as a staff (less than 2 minutes) before class each morning. We know a regulated system helps us to co-regulate with children, and take in more information, so great idea before reading the COE!
Brank, Nicole07:31:17 pmThat is a great idea Alyson!
{Lowe, Brenda}07:31:54 pmI like your thoughts on this. If we don't take care of ourselves in these moments we won't be good to anyone
Peralta, Mirla07:31:50 pmLove it, Alyson!
{Lowe, Brenda}07:32:11 pmAlyson I like that - limits rash decisions
{Lowe, Brenda}07:32:20 pm*
Roering, Angela07:32:16 pm*
Yoswa, Toni07:32:17 pm*
Ross, Amber07:32:18 pm*
Brank, Nicole07:32:23 pm*
Maameri, Ratiba07:32:34 pmBreathing AND drinking water ๐Ÿ™‚
Peralta, Mirla07:32:26 pm*
Notch, Kristin07:32:31 pm*
Maameri, Ratiba07:32:42 pm*
Kirchoff, Heather07:32:34 pm*
Evans, Casey07:32:34 pm*
{Lowe, Brenda}07:32:46 pmSomeone I can seek out for assistance is:
Quinn, Alyson07:32:46 pmOH YEAH RATIBA! Water is life.
Ascheman, Rosalie07:32:48 pm*
Quinn, Alyson07:32:58 pm*
{Lowe, Brenda}07:33:16 pmRatiba yes! another area I'm working on getting better at
Ross, Amber07:33:22 pmSomeone that has the same job title as me or higher to avoid gossip
Evans, Casey07:33:31 pm** Someone I can seek out is the owner/my mother and our licensor. I think that is always a great starting point- even if it is for more resources or insight beyond that!
Ascheman, Rosalie07:33:30 pmmy board of directors, my lead teacher, CICC and maybe some of my old classmates/teachers (?) ๐Ÿ™‚
Kirchoff, Heather07:33:58 pmAmber.. excellent rule of thumb right there!
Ross, Amber07:34:02 pmYes, outside services as well!
Quinn, Alyson07:34:07 pmI lean on Sheila Williams Ridge at the U of M CDLS. She is a super positive, thoughtful, intentionally, wise, amazing leader and has been in this work long enough to have seen some revisions of the COE : )
Brank, Nicole07:34:10 pmSomeone I can seek out is my executive Director or other director friends.
Notch, Kristin07:34:16 pmMy licensor, colleagues, my boss who was our director for 2 years on a variance.
Ross, Amber07:34:19 pmAlyson, she is amazing!
{Lowe, Brenda}07:34:34 pmyou have such good systems of support to keep you going
Yoswa, Toni07:34:27 pmlicensor, other owners/directors/
Maameri, Ratiba07:34:38 pmI love the community meetings we used to have at the DHS, we talk about our concerns and challenges
{Lowe, Brenda}07:34:46 pmthis is amazing cuz not everyone does
Kirchoff, Heather07:34:43 pmI can seek out supports in my licensor, my colleagues (like Amber said, of equal or higher authority), or institutions who may specialize in my unique situation
{Lowe, Brenda}07:35:15 pmif you ever need something additional their are online groups too that you can share ideas with
Brank, Nicole07:35:26 pmWhere do we find these online groups?
{Lowe, Brenda}07:35:36 pmI think I mentioned it befoe but the online discssion community group is Hello Naeyc
Peralta, Mirla07:35:35 pmI have a group chat with many other providers!
Quinn, Alyson07:35:36 pmOther directors! Even if it has been years, I find that sometimes I know a specific preschool director will understand and be able to help process how to ethically proceed.
{Lowe, Brenda}07:35:54 pmFacebook has directors groups
{Lowe, Brenda}07:35:58 pmyes
{Lowe, Brenda}07:36:12 pmlocal community groups - if you are in a community that still has them
Brank, Nicole07:36:03 pmI will have to look these up. Thanks!
Roering, Angela07:36:07 pmOur former director has a wealth of knowledge, our licensing agent is always helpful, and I like to look for online tools on DCYF
Maameri, Ratiba07:36:22 pmI have a good relationships with coaches from CICC, and health consultants to discuss concerns about behaviors, health matters and others
Ross, Amber07:36:33 pmNicole we should start a group in our area!
Brank, Nicole07:36:38 pmYES Amber!
{Lowe, Brenda}07:37:12 pmOther directors and leaders yes Alyson. Educators are great when you want an opinion but really I want my burdens to be at the top level so I don't suffocate my staff. But I will ask for opinions for by-ins
Maameri, Ratiba07:37:15 pmNow with the new location, I team with the new director and discuss policies and problem solve together.
Brank, Nicole07:37:29 pmI agree with that Brenda!
{Lowe, Brenda}07:38:06 pmRatiba we love you at CICC ๐Ÿ™‚
{Lowe, Brenda}07:38:20 pmoh yes your health consultant too - amazing resource
Ross, Amber07:38:17 pmAgree Brenda, sometimes when we ask for info.. then it turns into.. well you said... lol
Ascheman, Rosalie07:38:10 pmI'm part of several facebook groups, and sometimes outside opinions really help!
Quinn, Alyson07:38:32 pmRight on, Brenda - I have to be careful not to overshare with one staff. member and then not with another -it helps to go outside of our school to other directors, and get staff input for buy-in. Great point.
Maameri, Ratiba07:38:49 pmFacebook has directors groups! that a good one, what's the name of the group?
{Lowe, Brenda}07:39:08 pmAmber exactly. Or for some (I've watched this) the leader appears to 'not know what to do' or 'be indecisive' which is not the case - but it's the appearance
{Lowe, Brenda}07:39:37 pmI did a search onFacebook for a group - just do a general search for EC Leader or Director
{Lowe, Brenda}07:39:57 pmWhen I was in family child care we had local amazing support groups but those have fizzled out some
{Lowe, Brenda}07:40:16 pm*
Ross, Amber07:40:11 pm*
Roering, Angela07:40:17 pm*
Brank, Nicole07:40:17 pm*
Evans, Casey07:40:20 pm*
{Lowe, Brenda}07:40:35 pmThe most helpful thing I took away from this course is:
Quinn, Alyson07:40:30 pm*
Kirchoff, Heather07:40:35 pm*
Ross, Amber07:40:50 pmAlways do the right thing even when you don't feel like you "have to"
Maameri, Ratiba07:41:10 pmParents and families can also be our support ๐Ÿ™‚ we are happy with our families
Maameri, Ratiba07:41:18 pm*
Kirchoff, Heather07:41:13 pmThe amazing community and support system that can be found in fellow ECE leaders who also follow the COE ๐Ÿ™‚
Brank, Nicole07:41:14 pmDoing the right thing for the children
Yoswa, Toni07:41:19 pmResources, remembering my resources, and the community struggles!
Quinn, Alyson07:41:39 pmI really learned a lot from how each of us interpreted the COE, and how we all are doing good work, which takes reflection and training and connection and not operating in a vacuum. Thank you all!
Ascheman, Rosalie07:41:33 pmto know that our backbone is the COE! When in doubt, rely on the code!
Brank, Nicole07:41:47 pmAmber YES!
{Lowe, Brenda}07:42:13 pmYou all sound like amazing leaders. Your comments just now I could see you telling that to a colleage in need
Quinn, Alyson07:42:06 pmToni, I appreciated the "remembering my resources".
Notch, Kristin07:42:18 pmThe health and safety of children always come first. I think we already knew this, but this course solidified that the COE will always he a resource to back this.
Ross, Amber07:42:29 pmKristin, I agree!
{Lowe, Brenda}07:42:39 pmI have a copy of hte code on my bookshelf for reference
{Lowe, Brenda}07:42:47 pmright Kristin
Ross, Amber07:42:45 pmGood Idea, Brenda!
{Lowe, Brenda}07:42:55 pm ok last question*
Ross, Amber07:42:51 pm*
Notch, Kristin07:42:55 pm*
{Lowe, Brenda}07:43:05 pmI would like to know more about:
Evans, Casey07:42:57 pm** That I took away is to believe in yourself when making such hard decisions and choices.
Roering, Angela07:42:59 pm*
Evans, Casey07:42:58 pm*
Kirchoff, Heather07:43:00 pm*
Brank, Nicole07:43:03 pm*
{Lowe, Brenda}07:43:15 pmCasey I love that
Ross, Amber07:43:23 pmHow to implement it more with staff and leaders
Ross, Amber07:43:54 pmI feel it's so rich it can be hard to "teach" to veteran staff
Ascheman, Rosalie07:44:05 pmhow to be a more "sure" leader. I'm new, so leading it kind of hard!
{Lowe, Brenda}07:44:21 pmhmmm I can see that
Yoswa, Toni07:44:31 pmto create support for other directors/ owners without it being a conflict of interest
{Lowe, Brenda}07:44:43 pmIt is hard Rosalie and not for the faint of heart
Ross, Amber07:44:38 pmAnd it is so long!
Ross, Amber07:44:57 pmToni, I agree!
Evans, Casey07:45:02 pm** I would like to know more about how I can implement it into my regular vocabulary and conversations; more than it is. It is there, but could be more for sure!
Brank, Nicole07:45:03 pmto get more support from other directors
Ascheman, Rosalie07:44:58 pmI feel like I'm trying, but not quite succeeding yet!
{Lowe, Brenda}07:45:18 pmAmber a what would you do scenerio sometimes can be a fun way to help staff t hink about it in a non defensive way - bit by bit
Kirchoff, Heather07:45:17 pmI would like to know more about how I can teach it in a way that is both digestible and easy to understand, but sticks with staff and really covers what the COE stands for. I want my staff to be equally knowledgeable on it but not overwhelm them - I want it to be something that really lives within them.
Maameri, Ratiba07:45:32 pmLeading with professionalism, and solving dilemmas following the COE , and I a so exited to add more of the ethical conducts to our handbooks for families and employees.
{Lowe, Brenda}07:45:34 pmI get it Casey
Ross, Amber07:45:36 pmThat is a good idea, thank you Brenda!
{Lowe, Brenda}07:46:11 pmRatiba that is a good idea and a good start to begin to imbed it
Quinn, Alyson07:46:05 pmHow to help a negative staff member bring more joy and light to the work we do. I am sitting with the "hire a positive attitude over a negative but more experienced staff member." If that ship has sailed, I can use the COE to help bring common language and support to our team. Being professional is a practice.
{Lowe, Brenda}07:46:27 pmOh Alyson that is so hard ughhh
Maameri, Ratiba07:46:30 pmI love that Casey!
Notch, Kristin07:46:22 pmI would love to hear more stories and examples. I am a hands on learner and love to hear others perspectives.
{Lowe, Brenda}07:46:39 pmOh my it's 7:46
{Lowe, Brenda}07:46:42 pmalready!
